Key Findings: What the Data Indicates
VDMA & Maier+Vidorno (M+V Altios) are pleased to share the findings of our latest collaborative research report, “The Great Resignation: How to Hire & Retain Successfully within the Engineering Sector.” This study explores the real-world impact of workforce transitions on German SMEs operating in India, particularly within the mechanical and engineering domains.
Surveying nearly 80 companies—comprising VDMA members and other German engineering firms active in India—our research offers timely insights into how organizations are navigating post-pandemic workforce dynamics and shifting talent expectations.
Top Three Themes Identified
Impact of Resignation
While the engineering sector has been relatively resilient, the ripple effects of the ‘Great Resignation’ are undeniable. Mid-level resignations have especially created gaps in continuity, affecting delivery schedules, internal mentoring pipelines, and customer relationships.Availability of Quality Skill Sets
A significant concern voiced by many SMEs is the limited availability of candidates with the right technical expertise and soft skills. Hiring is no longer just about filling a role—it’s about finding adaptable talent who can grow with the company and meet evolving operational challenges.Competence Building & Employee Engagement
Companies that invest in structured training programs, continuous learning, and meaningful engagement have shown better retention rates. Employee well-being, flexible work environments, and transparent leadership are becoming key differentiators.
Lessons to Learn: How Great Leaders Leave a Sustained Impact
From the research, a clear lesson emerges: leaders who invest in long-term people strategies—beyond immediate business results—create organizations that retain talent and maintain stability in times of change. Empowering teams, encouraging autonomy, and nurturing future leaders from within are essential leadership practices that leave lasting impact.
